MAKERBOT SPACE PROGRAM // 3rd Ward's Luke Schantz Helps Launch Colbert's Head Into Space

Luke Shantz (right) preparing to send Stephen Colbert's head into space.

As if the folks at MakerBot haven't already proven that they are on the bleeding edge of technological innovation, the Brooklyn-based 3D printer company has now extended its presence to the final frontier.

Yep, outer space.

Not suprisingly, they turned to 3rd Ward member, instructor and all-around media/technology expert Luke Schantz (read our interview with him) to help them get there.

After MakerBot founder Bre Pettis appeared on The Colbert Report and presented the host with a 3D-printed bust of his own head, he decided to launch Stephen Colbert's head into space. Armed with a weather balloon, Flipcam and GPS-enabled cell phone, they did just that.

Naturally, such an amazing feat has been attracting attention far and wide, from BoingBoing, Mashable and TechCrunch to MAKE Magazine, Huffington Post and CBS News.

Watch Colbert's ascent below. (Honestly, the footage post-launch is sublime.) Or, if you want to full experience, check out the unedited 84-minute video.

TIME VACUUM // Wonderputt: Mini Golf in Another Dimension

Typically, with online Flash games, you've got your forever-2D Frogger, Pacman, Tetris, etc. When we think of mini golf, we recall childhood birthday parties and maybe that scene from Happy Gilmore.

Then enters UK-based animation guru Reece Millidge and his interactive arts studio Damp Gnat with Wonderputt; one of the most impressive showings of web creativity we've seen. Expanding the territory of the Flash game into an immersive 3D environment, Millidge's managed to create 18 playable holes littered with killer whales, alien abductions, crop circles and ski slopes. Playing the game isn't necessarily about trying to stay below par, but more about mastering the intricate concepts that govern each hole.

Just as fascinating as the game itself is the story behind its creation, which spanned almost an entire year. Check out this behind-the-scenes look at the making of Wonderputt, from conceptual sketches and design notes to info on sound design and play testing.

Watch the Wonderputt trailer after the jump and tee off now. Though get ready to minimize the screen if you sense the old boss creeping around your desk, this one doesn't exactly qualify as "productivity" (unless of course, you're taking tips on completely inspiring online animation.)

TEACHER FEATURE // Writing Instructor Grace Bello Sends Another Story to the Stage

The last time with checked in with 3rd Ward flash fiction teacher Grace Bello her new short story, "Advice from the Prettiest Girl in the Office" had just been published on the comedy website Splitsider.

Now, just like her Street Car Named Desire riff for McSweeneys.com, the story will part of Lively Productions' monthly "Blogologues" series, which brings blog posts and other online writing out of the computer screen and onto the stage.

The New York Times recently featured Lively Productions and "Blogologues" on its East Village Blog, speaking with Jen Jamula and Allison Goldberg, who founded the theater company back in 2007.

"'Blogologues,' an upcoming show at Under St. Marks, will turn the spigot and let Internet culture gush out at full flow," said the Times.

Bello's story will be part of "Blogologues: I Need A Vocation," which will take place on Monday, August 29 at Under St. Marks (94 St. Mark's Place, between 1st and A). Shows are at 7:30pm and 9pm, and a $15 ticket includes a beer

NEW MEMBER WELCOME // Jacob Ruch's Salvaged Materials + Beautiful Furniture

Photo by Drew Kelly.Having recently moved to Brooklyn from California, designer and furniture maker Jacob Ruch didn't have to think much about where he'd continue his work.

"3rd Ward was a no-brainer with its well tooled wood and metal shops, and its surplus of creative energy," he says. "I was able to start taking commissions as soon as I touched down, and have already found inspiration in all the interesting work going on around me."

Working under the name REASON (inspired by his great uncle Reason Ruch), Ruch avoids waste in his designs, using salvaged materials and working with limited resources. "I try to keep it simple and clean, and push the boundaries of the 'reclaimed look,'" he says.

This approach gives his furniture both simple, refined beauty and a wealth of character.

Right now Ruch is working on a new line of wood and steel beds. "I do custom work, and I'm pushing to refine concepts for wider distribution," he says.

Take a look at some of Ruch's REASON furniture after the jump and keep up with his latest news and work on his website.

ESSENTIAL EVENT // The World Maker Faire returns to NYC this September

Hey, all you makers. We feel it's our duty to not let you miss the 2nd Annual World Maker Faire, which will bring a broad range of amazing creativity and innovation to the New York Hall of Science in Queens on September 17 and 18. It's an especially apt location for the fair, as the hall was formerly part of the 1964 World's Fair.

Organized by the people at MAKE Magazine, the event is "a newfangled fair that brings together science, art, craft and engineering plus music in a fun, energized, and exciting public forum." Last year's event featured more than 450 vendors and received widespread coverage from PBS, the Wall Street Journal, Time Out New York, WNYC and many other outlets.

Most importantly though: If you're interested in participating in the fair, you've still got a few days to apply. The deadline is this Saturday, August 20. Just fill out the entry form. The fair is open to both individuals and groups and non-commercial and commercial makers.

Hit the jump to watch a video about last year's inaugural World Maker Fair from Rocketboom.com. Also, make sure to like the World Maker Faire's Facebook page for the latest updates.

ALUMNI UPDATE // Gina Pollack joins team of internationally-renowned photographer JR

Gina Pollack (second from left) in the South Bronx working on a group action for JR's Inside Out project.

Today we check in 3rd Ward member with 3rd Ward alum Gina Pollack, who got her current job, working in the studio of renowned French photographer JR, through 3rd Ward's exclusive Membership Newsletter.

After graduating from NYU, where she studied Photography and Journalism, Pollack worked for a while as a photo re-toucher in a commercial studio, doing mostly cosmetic product photography. "Not surprisingly, I hated it," she says. And then one day the Member Newsletter arrived in her inbox. "I immediately noticed JR's name and the opening to work in his studio on the Inside Out project," she says. "I applied immediately and was called into the studio the next day."

Now Pollack works full-time on Inside Out, a large-scale participatory project. "JR won the TED Prize for 2011 and his wish was to get everyone involved in street art to tell their own stories," she says. "People everywhere from Tunisia to Abu Dhabi upload portraits with personal statements everyday. We approve their submissions at the studio, print their photos into posters and mail them with pasting instructions. Donations are accepted but not required. It's important that anyone can participate."

In addition to being inspired by creativity and diversity that the project has attracted, from group projects on child monks in Thailand to gay rights in Russia to the homeless community in San Francisco, Pollack has learned the unique skill of pasting. "I worked on the wall at Bowery/Houston and Grand/ Wooster, mounting images of Native Americans from a reservation in North Dakota, as well as a project celebrating women in the South Bronx, where we pasted faces from the community holding the eyes of women over their own," she says.

Right now Pollack is working a group action for the anniversary of September 11th, as well as upcoming large-scale actions around the world in places like the Middle East, Detroit and Philadelphia.

Outside of her work with JR, Pollack freelances for the Village Voice, shooting restaurants and concerts, and works on her own travel and documentary projects. "I've self-published a book called 'Sorority Girls,' which documents sorority life in Southern California, and I hope to gain more access to sorority houses to continue the project in the near future," she says. "Last Fall, I photographed an outsider's view of israel, highlighting the many groups (Jews, Muslims, Christians, Yeminites, and Palestinians) and the way they all co-exist in such a beautiful, war-torn country. I am currently working on a new project to document graffiti on ads in the New York subways."

Hit the jump to check out some of Gina Pollack's photography below and swing by her website.

Also, Pollack tells us that JR and his crew are always looking for participants, so if you are interested in leading a group action or submitting a portrait, visit his website and get in touch.

PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT // BROOKLYN CULINARY ARTISANS UNITE

Photo credt: Winona Barton-Ballantine

The past year has brought tremendous growth and exposure for Ovenly, a Brooklyn-based creative kitchen founded by Agatha Kulaga and Erin Patinkin. The two met in a culinary-themed book club a few years ago and fell in love with each other’s potluck contributions. Upon recognizing the compatibility of their palates and vision, they started a baking company that already has a devoted following.

They’re quick to credit local partners and collaborators, from Paulie Gee’s to Brooklyn Brewery to Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, and now, theiy've teamed up with Steve’s Craft Ice Cream, epitomizing the benefits of creating alliances:

“Our partnership with Steve's really solidified the idea of what true collaboration means, and demonstrated that it’s really a valuable and significant part of what Ovenly does,” says Agatha. "There's obviously the cross-marketing, which allows us to reach a wider audience. We also get to throw out our wild ideas, come up with amazing flavor combinations together, and then get crazy in the kitchen. The creative element is the driving force of our business, but it’s easy to neglect when there are so many day-to-day orders to fulfill. There is so much creative energy buzzing around New York; why not combine forces and make something amazing together?”

(HINT: Must-go-to event, starring these very forces to be announced this morning--stay tuned.)
