International photographer Q. Sakamaki captures Within the Land of Ash

© Q. SakamakiSaturday night, thousands roamed the streets and warehouses of East Williamsburg to celebrate Halloween. Renowned photographer Q. Sakamaki was there to unravel its secrets and document the revelry.

Q. is a long time NYC resident who famously documented East Village & Lower East Side during the 1988 anti-gentrification riots. Through crisp editorial photography, he has also told the stories of Haitian refugees, Bengali sex workers and favela residents in Rio. We were honored to have Q. in attendance at Within the Land of Ash and bring you a special set of photos from the event.

Workbook Project interviews us about the future of working

How's a person supposed to work in this hyper-connected, design-obsessed, post-recession, environmentally-conscious future?

Workbook Project, the restless minds profiling the process of funding, creating, distributing and sustaining one's creative efforts, recently interviewed our Marketing Director, Jess, about the what's next in the realm of working.

See below for her interview and grab the WBP promo code for 1 month of 3rd Ward membership FREE by clicking here.

WBP: What is the main concept and intention of 3rd Ward?

Jess: Give creative people the resources they need so they can take risks and make things the world has never seen. When you don’t have to worry about space, tools, knowledge, etc… the world is at your fingertips. Without physical limitations, you can realize your creative potential and more.

W: How is this concept of community / shared workspace and artist development facilitating the local creative community?

J: It is low-cost, high-inspiration. Don’t know how to use After Effects? Take a class. Need to shoot your new jewelry line? Book a photo studio. Need some legs for your table? Ask your new friend in the metal shop. By sharing tools, knowledge and space, creative people can seamlessly cross media boundaries, learn faster and grow stronger. More and more creative people are moving to freelance. 3rd Ward gives them structure and endless possibilities to create and collaborate.

W: How has 3rd Ward been able to sustain and grow into a thriving business?

J: We’ve been able to grow by listening to our members. We’d just be a building with some expensive stuff inside were it not for our people. They are very vocal about what works for them, and we respond in kind. Ultimately, what’s best for their businesses — whether we’re talking about our photographers, set designers, fabricators, hackers, or whatever — is best for our business. We succeed as a creative workspace if they succeed as creators.

We’ve grown by offering the best possible experience to our members — through our comprehensive facilities and classes, but also by creating a truly warm and supportive environment. Together, that creates pretty fertile ground for pretty amazing work!

W: What’s the future of 3rd Ward? What’s the future of creative workspaces?

J: We’re building out our 2nd floor to include a bigger wood shop, more photo studios, and more learning spaces. We’re also developing a “3rd Ward Member-Made” brand of furniture that we’d like to sell at stores across the country (if you’re a buyer, contact us!).

The creative workspaces of tomorrow will likely have some aspect of sharing. There’s less waste, less money spent, and more opportunities for collaboration. Also, being successful now depends on how well you’re able to draw upon different disciplines. People wear more hats now because budgets are tight and companies must do more with less. Knowing how to use Photoshop is like knowing how to use scissors and glue. Everyone needs to be a marketer. If you’re a set designer, you might do some 3D modeling, but you’re much more marketable if you can build the set, choreograph, film, edit, and write the copy on the fliers!

3rd Ward is a pretty unique place and there’s no where in the world quite like it. It’d be interesting to see more places like us. They’d be competition, but I believe a rising tide raises all ships.

Plus, stay tuned for more from 3rd Ward and WBP (and design:related and IKEA, too). We've cooked up a cool project that we will share with you very soon.

3rd Ward member & writer Robin Grearson teams up with street artist Quel Beast

Photo: Quel Beast's latest work in ChelseaChallenge: make a piece of striking, thought-provoking art... and throw it away.

That's the driving force behind 3rd Ward member and writer Robin Grearson's newest project. She joined our community looking to meet and collaborate with other creatives. Robin accomplished that and more when she teamed up with Brooklyn street artist Quel Beast to profile his process of creating paintings and leaving them on the street for others to find. Her own narrative intertwines as she becomes the subject of Quel Beast's recent street-art work.

Intrigued? Head to Brooklyn Fireproof this Saturday, October 23rd at 7pm to hear Robin participate in the venue's new reading series, Fireside Follies

3RD WARD TEACHER Allison Maletz featured on Break Thru Radio

Image: "Mom Learning to Float", Allison MaletzAllison Maletz is an artist and 3rd Ward instructor of classes like Painting with Watercolor and Installation: Creating an Environment. Her large-scale watercolor paintings recently caught the interest of Break Thru Radio. As the beautifully executed pieces investigate suburban America and odd moments in her family’s history, they ring with a curious narrative.

Allison says, “there’s something about watercolor. It has this other level of being kitsch.”

To hear more about Allison's passion for watercolor, exploring family stories through paint and her upcoming show at The Convent of St. Cecilia, click here: http://www.breakthruradio.com/index.php?show=11744.
