Capturing Revelry from Coast to Coast

It can be hard to wait a whole year for a beloved holiday to come around again. This year, photographer and 3rd Ward Member Amir Ebrahimi didn’t have to.

Amir embarked on a four-day odyssey to photograph his favorite day of the year—Halloween—from East coast to West, celebrating in multiple cities and time zones.

In a journey that began with our very own neighborhood-wide carnival Within the Land of Ash, continued underground in the New York City subways and then Manhattan, and ended days later with San Francisco’s Day of the Dead Parade, Amir captured masquerading merrymaking on both coasts, armed with a Lomo Action film camera (shoots four images onto one 35mm frame) to quadruple the spectacle.

This Monday, start your week off right with a free lecture from 3rd Ward Education. Beloved instructor Allison Maletz, who teaches Watercolor and Installation Art, will speak about the art of creating an environment, in which the audience is asked to use senses beyond vision for the experience.

We'll begin with a brief introduction to contemporary installation art and define what it is, breaking down the different approaches – public art, electronic art, land art, sound, web art, graffiti, performance, and sculpture. Allison will also talk about how to draft an installation proposal that one can submit to galleries, organizations and juried shows.
