3rd Ward is a really dynamic place and i am excited to see what will happen next and where it will grow in the future.

What's been your biggest surprise since starting?
Initially I could not always discern the employees from members-it has been a nice surprise that everyone at 3rd Ward is engaged with each other.

What do you do for fun outside of work?
I like to make hand-bound books and I am starting my own small publishing imprint called No Issues Press.

You have a graphic design carte blanche. What do you do?

Once I had a design carte blanche and I made a documentary film [about Attica], with no prior experience, so who knows... I like to try new things.

How do you Talk to Outer Space? Well…

3rd Ward Member and Teacher, Luke Schantz, made a long-distance phone call over the weekend. To outer space! Check out the antenna he made for the first artist space broadcast ever to hit the universe, Time Capsules to Outer Space.

See below for the entire process. And don’t worry, you’ve got the scoop.  Given that the nearest sentient beings out there are likely a couple light years away, we’re pretty sure you’ve heard it here first.

Meet Erica, our New PM Studio Manager!

Stop by 3rd Ward and you might meet a new face at the front desk. Meet Erica Eudoxie, your new go-to gal whether you're here as a Member, student, event guest, or whatever. Say hi when you meet her and learn more about what makes this Brooklyn-native tick below.

What did you do before 3rd Ward?
I spent two years at an ad agency working as a production coordinator, followed by a semester of school to finish my undergrad, followed by a couple months of in depth existential contemplation!

What drew you here?
Unadulterated, unfiltered, unedited, and uncensored self expression. I feel like the role of art is to inspire reflection, shock, horror, and awe, and I believe 3rd Ward is a wonderful playground for this. Selfishly, I love being surrounded by artists; they infuse the air with a stimulating energy. It's invigorating and addictive!

What are you most excited about here?
I'm excited to get to know all the artisans here, to begin creating my own projects, and to be a part of such an amazing creative community in my hometown of Brooklyn.

What's been your biggest surprise since starting?
The immense amount of resources and services available here and that it's supported by such a tight team. It's equal parts cool and astounding.
How would you characterize the people you've met while working here?
The common thread is that they're all creators...they are folks who feel compelled to fill empty, vacant spaces with something of their own invention.

What do you do for fun outside of work?
I love films, film writing, and passionate discussions about character. I'm often singing and strumming along to the few chords I know on the guitar. Dancing is my therapy. I love any excuse to eat. And I really enjoy going out to support the work of my arty friends. Street art rules and it's fun discovering new pieces. Also...Hi, my name is Erica, and I'm addicted to playing Minesweeper on my iPhone.

Someone comes to the front desk. They have an urgent request. What's the best way to butter you up?
A smile goes a long way, you'll always get one in return ;]

Good Luck, Laura!

Yesterday, our very own Laura Enama had her last day at 3rd Ward. She started as our intern, then became our bookkeeper, then took the center stage as our PM Studio Manager. Now she's bringing her sweetness and smiles onto other projects.

On Friday, we made sure she left 3rd Ward on a happy (and freaky) note, and walked out to the Twin Peak soundtrack wearing some masks you might recognize. Good luck Laura and hope we didn't scare you!

SOMETHING I ATE // Food + Art Event

SOMETHING I ATE
Friday, April 29th, 7-10pm
Rouge 58 // 555 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY

SOMETHING I ATE is a collaborative food + art project between Sam Kim of Skimkim Foods and Kat Popiel of On Plate, Still Hungry. Creative minds converge for this event with food being the principle medium. Presented at Rouge58 Gallery in Williamsburg, artists will document seven days of their personal eating experience from zero to x “meals” a day, culminating in exclusive works using    whichever media they prefer – photo, paint, jewelry, fashion, film, music, etc.

The idea is that from food, we derive pleasure, satisfaction, energy and inspiration (or vice versa) and these elements, whether cognizant of them or not, ignite our creative fires. Something I Ate intends to share various artists’ true perception of food and sustenance in everyday life.

Following final submissions of the exclusive works, each artist will pinpoint a defining meal, ingredient, or experience and Sam Kim of Skimkim Foods will present her seasonal, local interpretation including a pairing of cocktails by Kanon Vodka.

The exhibit, co-curated by Joann Kim of Greenpoint Open Studios, will remain on show until May 1st.

For more information and to purchase tickets click here.

Participating artists include: Alessandro Simonetti, Kareem Black, Slutlust, Gastronomista, Phil Knott, Briana Heard, Edgartista, Jason McKoy (Shadowplastic), Michael Greenberg, Aerosyn Lex, Jesse Untract-Oakner and Brian Hubble.  Special guests and renowned food architects, Bompas & Parr, in town from London to promote their book, will be creating a surprise site-specific installation in the backyard of Rouge58.
