Enameling
Enameling is an ancient process where glass is fused to metal through heat. Glass is applied to a treated copper, silver or gold surface as powder, rod or bead. The variety of color and shape of the glass creates a dynamic, luminous and intricate surface. You can think of enameling as the nexus of painting, glass and metal.
Students will experiment with enameling on copper and are encouraged to explore the possibilities that this painterly process allows. Because enameling is expedient, students can expect to leave the class with several samples. Students will learn about stenciling, color and necessary safety practices for working with glass, metal and furnaces. In addition, students will be provided with information about how to set up their own kilns or furnaces (enameling ovens), supplies and suppliers, and enameling safely in their homes or studios.
