Time Capsules to Space
Friday April 15 | Saturday April 16 | Sunday April 17
Doors Open 6:15PM - refreshments available
Broadcast begins 7PM SHARP
Video Message Post-Event 8:30-9PM
HERE ART CENTER | Dorothy B. Williams Theater, 145 6th Avenue New York, NY
Antenna transmission occurs LIVE each night from undisclosed location in Brooklyn, NY

Got something to say to the universe? Transmit your own video message to space and start an interplanetary, interdimensional discussion in the cosmos.

Luke Schantz (Member since ’10, Blender and MaxMSP instrutor) designed and built the antenna that will broadcast this unique series of sonic, visual and kinetic performances into outer space. Join more space-minded New York artists and inspire a deeper human appreciation of Earth’s relationship to the greater cosmic landscape. The 1st night celebrates the Past, the 2nd night the Present, the 3rd night the Future.

PROGRAM DETAILS

FRIDAY APRIL 15 - a time capsule dedicated to the past - The Past Within Us
A journey into the memories embedded deep within movement, visuals, and sounds, this evening features a letter to extraterrestrials, a live mix projection and dance collaboration exploring the birth of the universe, a Modern Arnis martial arts demonstration, and a metaphysical music project calling back to the souls of the past.

SATURDAY APRIL 16 - a time capsule dedicated to the present - The Presents Around Us
Expressions of living in the moment are the theme of this time capsule, with an audiovisual/movement performance themed on laughter, a walking sound experiment using live radios and transmissions with live visuals, a video visiting the concept of human clothing, and a live VJ/DJ performance created with a custom video projection sculpture.

SUNDAY APRIL 17 - a time capsule dedicated to the future - The Future Beyond Us
Steeped in the possibilities of what exists and what could be, the final transmission is an unfolding of dimensions through a mini-modular-synthesizer orchestra and word collaboration that bleeds into a deep audio-multivisual journey between DJs, sounds artists, and VJs.

What will you say to extraterrestrial life? Learn more at http://timecapsulestospace.net

TICKETS are $15 and can be purchased at the box office or http://www.here.org/shows/calendar/

Co-Working: The new company structure for today's freelance workforce

Co-working. It's a buzzword, for sure. But what is it really? Co-working is a lifestyle. A environmental movement. A social need. And as these numbers from Deskmag, an online magazine about co-working, show, it's a movement that is empirically better:

- 82% of coworkers in the U.S. feel more motivated and productive since joining

- 50% of U.S. coworkers report higher incomes since joining -- only 2% suffer a loss

- 45% are freelancers or solo entrepreneurs, mostly working in the creative industries

Deskmag also reports that the average cost of a flexible desk in the U.S. is $192/month. The 3rd Ward co-working package is a steal at $99. Learn more & start working (happily, with others) by visiting the 3rd Ward Membership page.

Plus, read more interesting tips, studies and stats on co-working at the Deskmag website.

An Earth Day Viral Video Event // This Friday

An Earth Day Viral Video Event
Friday, April 15th 5:30-8:30

195 Morgan Ave // Studio A

Join us this Friday with our friends at Belgrave Trust for a greentastic video event where you can share your own vision of an ideally designed planet. If things were YOUR WAY, what would our planet be like?

We're all at a unique point in time where knowledge, technology, and the power of information gives us the opportunity to “design” our own future. What would you create? What would you alter? What would you take away forever?

The goal is a fun, social event to get no-holds-barred responses from the city's diverse minds (that's you!), and compile them into a viral Earth Day video. You can jump on camera for 30 seconds or 5 minutes, all that's asked is that you enjoy yourself and speak your mind. Props, costumes, or any visual representations are hardly required but always fun.

Meg Paska, courtesy of New York Post
Just in time for spring’s arrival, 3rd Ward teacher and Brooklyn homesteader extraordinaire, Meg Paska, has been profiled by the New York Post.

You don’t need to live in the country to enjoy fresh eggs, grow fresh vegetables, and make your own jams and pickles. In her home in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Meg keeps chickens and bees, composts, and forages through Brooklyn’s many green spaces.

Now’s the time to get in touch with your urban homesteader. Enjoying the NYC farmlife is easier and more accessible than you might think. New 3rd Ward classes in rooftop beekeeping, urban food production, and raising chickens start as soon as May 1st. See the full list here.

From Drink N' Draw to F.I.T. // A 3rd Ward Success Story

Lots of people come to Drink N' Draw, professionals, amateurs, and people like Liz who was led down a path she never would have expected. She wrote to us with her amazing story. Read about Liz's successful journey from Drink N' Draw to F.I.T. below!

Hello,

My name is Liz, and I'm a regular at your Drink N' Draw events. I wanted to write you to thank you for helping me get into FIT!

I am a beginner, self-taught artist. I just recently discovered my interest in drawing when I started attending Drink N' Draw, in addition to doodling a bit on my own. I got the crazy idea to work on a portfolio to submit to F.I.T. I had never studied art in a formal setting, but was always envious of all "you artists." I really only initially did it as a self-assigned "homework," that would give me a reason to work on drawings with a particular goal. My portfolio ended up with a few pieces I did during Drink N' Draw. The admissions team at FIT must have loved them because I was accepted into the Illustration program!

Anyway, thanks again for the amazing Drink N' Draw sessions! They have really inspired me and helped me grow as an artist.

Sincerely,
Liz

Join us for Drink N' Draw, every Wednesday from 8 to 10:30 pm.  Admission is $15 per person, $10 with a friend and FREE for Members.
