Branding Your Craft : Telling Stories About What You Make

Branding Your Craft : Tell Stories About What You Make
Thursday, June 21 // 7:30-9:30 pm
195 Morgan Avenue // $20 Non-Members // $15 Members

How do you turn your passion and skill into a story that compels people to listen, learn, and buy?
And more importantly, how can you stand out from the mass of "artisanal" brands and products currently dominating the Brooklyn market?

In this lecture, you'll learn strategies and tactics that can be used to communicate the essentials of what makes your craft unique, and ways you can turn your crafting process into a story that powers your marketing.

Topics covered will include:
  • Defining Your Brand: identifying the most compelling "ingredients" for your story
  • Strategy Development: "developing a language," "defining a home," or "establishing an ideology"
  • Crafting Content: developing promotional materials around your craft
  • Exploring Examples of Brands (both big and small) that have deployed similar techniques

John Fischer is a marketing and brand strategist who has worked with companies ranging from Disney to Harley-Davidson. Hi, Pleased to Meet You, Wanna be in a Show?

Hi, Pleased to Meet You, Wanna be in a Show?
Tuesday, June 12 // 7:30 to 9:30 pm
195 Morgan Ave // FREE

Join curator and writer Raul Zamudio as he gives a selected presentation of his 80+ worldwide curatorial projects. No stranger to controversy, a couple of his shows--for their evocative and provocative nature--have been vandalized in South Korea and shut down in Shanghai. Zamudio has curated shows for several biennials and organized exhibitions in galleries, museums, academic institutions and art fairs.  He will not only talk about these exhibitions but also how he has tried to tweak the traditional curatorial model of exhibition practice, what strikes him when selecting artists and inspirations for exhibition concepts. Finally, he will announce an exhibition that will take place at 3rd Ward!

Audience members will be asked to submit artworks these can include performance, painting, works on paper, photography, sculpture, installation, video and sound. This promises to be a first at 3rd Ward, a lecture culminating in a group show at 3rd Ward, curated by one of the most interesting players in the international contemporary art scene.

**You will be asked to email images of your work to Raul.  Please do not bring work with you.

Practical Skills 2.0

Practical Skills 2.0
Tuesday, June 19 // 7:30 to 9:30 pm
195 Morgan Ave

Growing up, society reiterates the so-called formula for success: good grades, SAT scores, a relevant college major. What isn't part of the process is learning the practical skills necessary to tie it all together.

What do we do now that our economy has left the job landscape in pieces?

At present, we have a generation of young professionals with little opportunity to flex their talents. What is required is a drastic revisioning of our expectations. We need a new version of pursuing a career, gaining experience, and landing a job.

In this lecture, we discuss the current cultural landscape, cover exactly what it looks like to apply that experience in this constantly evolving, non-traditional world, and land a job - as well as how to navigate the traditional professional world - from emailing culture to running a meeting.

Jake Katz is a 26-year-old entertainment industry consultant on the Millennial generation. Since wrapping a Psychology degree from Brooklyn College in 2009, Jake has been able to carve out a career niche for himself. He currently manages a startup called Youth Pulse, and previously held positions at MTV as Manager of Insights Innovation and NBCUniversal as Director of Trends Research. As both a Millennial himself and a cultural researcher, Jake holds a unique perspective when it comes to decoding the new rules of our world.
