Works on Paper // An Introduction to Collage & Mixed Media

Students will explore the formal elements of collage: texture, composition, line, balance and color, while experimenting with a variety of mark-making techniques, such as stamping, transferring, and wet and dry media. We will cover essential collage methods, as well as alternative processes including matte medium and photocopy transferring.
Students will use collage to explore these techniques, creating a set of small mixed-media works on paper. At the end of the class, students will collaborate on an experimental drawing game, allowing them to "play" further using their new mixed-media skills, and work together to create beautiful 2D works of art! (think exquisite corpse!)
Students must bring:
1. 2D collage materials you'd like to use in class (i.e. magazines, cut paper, photographs)
2. 5-10 photocopies of small 4"X5" images in black and white (the simpler, the better!). These printouts must be photocopies for the transferring process to work.
We'll provide a sheet of 18" x 24" paper as well as your collage/drawing tools, but students should bring any other tools & materials they'd like to experiment with. The possibilities are endless!
This class is geared toward beginners. No prior knowledge of collage or drawing is necessary.

Christine Garvey is a NY based artist and printmaker that works primarily in print, collage and mixed-media. She received her BFA in Printmaking and Drawing from Washington University in St. Louis, and later moved to Thailand where she studied with Chiang Mai Art on Paper’s Master Printer, Kitikong Tilokwattanotai.
