Sewing Workshop // Replacing a Coat Lining

Is the relationship between your coat and its lining unraveling? Hanging on by a thread? Coming apart at the seams? When you put your arm in your jacket sleeve, is there nothing left to hold on to? Is there a feeling of detachment? Separation? I think it is time to create a new lining, one that wants to have a future together.

In this 6-hour workshop you will learn how to remove your old lining, use the lining pieces to create a pattern, sew a new lining and attach it to your coat. You will become familiar with deconstruction patternmaking techniques, get to practice your machine sewing and learn the slip stitch. Most importantly, you will leave with a brand new lining for your coat!

Students should bring:
-coat, jacket or blazer that needs the lining replaced: leave your old lining in place or bring it with you, even if it is partially ripped. We will be using it to make a pattern from.
-lining fabric: bring enough yardage to replace your old lining. You can bring your garment to the fabric store and they can advise you how many yards to purchase. When choosing a lining fabric you want something that is smooth to the touch, firmly or tightly woven, slippery, and light enough in weight not to alter the shape or structure of the garment. Some lining fabrics are synthetic (nylon, acetate or taffeta), but you can also choose silk or satin.
-matching thread
-fabric scissors
