Rooftop Beekeeping 101
In this two-session course you'll learn everything you need to know to get started keeping bees in your own backyard, rooftop, or community garden.
What do beekeepers look for when they open a hive? How do I keep bees organically or with minimal treatment? Do city bees have enough to eat? What if I don't have a backyard, or what do I say to my neighbors? Aren't the bees all dying? How much does it cost to start a beehive, and can raising bees be profitable? We'll cover all this and more to get you and your hives up and humming by spring.
Whether you're a honey-lover interested in starting a hive or two of your own, or an urban gardener looking to learn more about a primary pollinator, this course will give you a thorough introduction to the insects that bring you 3 out of 4 bites of the food on your plate.
Instructor
Emily Vaughn is an urban farmer, forager, and homesteader living in Brooklyn. She keeps bees for the Brooklyn Grange and works as a freelance horticulturalist. Despite ultra-wild experiences like studying Arctic seabirds amidst marauding polar bears in Alaska, she is constantly astounded by the subtle power of the sustaining natural processes that exist even within high-density cities like the one she calls home.
Emily holds a BA in Biology from Kenyon College, and has studied landscape architecture at Harvard University, and horticulture at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
