Lost Wax Casting
Ring by Launa Eddy
Lost Wax Casting is the process in which an object, preferably wax, is turned into a metal form. The process is useful for jewelry or small scale metal fabrication. Your object can be made out of other materials such as resin, plastic, or a variety of found objects. The exact surface that is on your initial model is going to be the surface of your metal piece.
The casting class will be split up into 3 parts during the 6 week session: casting found objects, wax carving, and lost-wax casting. We will start off with a found object as a test run so that you will get a good feel for casting. This requires you to bring a found object no bigger than 2 inches x 2 inches on the first day of class. You will learn how to spruce your model, invest your model in a flask, burn out the wax, and cast that object in metal. Next, you will create a model in wax; anything you imagine might be possible. The maximum size for your wax cast object will be 2 inches x 2 inches x 3 inches. You'll learn about different types of wax and how to work with them. Once your model is finished, you will cast it in a similar manner as the found object. Using a variety of tools, such as a flexshaft, you'll finish the surface of these cast objects.
We'll provide you with either brass or bronze. If you wish to procure another metal such as silver, we'll tell you where to get it and how to cast it (although we might recommend that you make at least your first attempt using base metal). Everyone will cast their own pieces under the guidance of the instructor. You will leave the class with two projects, so bring some ideas and a few found objects for the first day! Space is limited; advanced registration is recommended.
