Introduction to Fashion Design

In designing a cohesive fashion collection, it is important for designers to understand the technical aspects of fashion design such as color theory and placement, and also to have an open mind in order to pull inspiration from various sources.

In the first class, students will be introduced to fashion designers of the past and present through a slideshow of images as well as examples of fashion collections and page layouts. Students will develop a solid set of croquis (fashion poses) to use as a base figure to draw their designs on. Subsequent classes will review basic drawing skills, including the 10 head fashion figure, and focus on rendering fabric, garment construction, and textures. We will also explore the basics of putting together color stories and mood boards. A multitude of color mediums will be introduced that students can later purchase once they decide what the mood and style of their final project will be.

Students will be asked to sketch at least 30 rough designs to narrow down for their 6-8 look collection for the final project. A demo of professional mounting techniques will be given. There will be a final critique the last day with the whole group.

A basic kit will be provided the first day including a spiral bound sketch book, HD and mechanical pencils, tracing paper, graph paper, and transfer paper. Any color medium students decide is suitable for their final project can be purchased later.

Some previous drawing experience is helpful but not required. This class goes well alongside Fashion Illustration and is a great step towards building a fashion portfolio.
