Intermediate Welding // Techniques for Furniture

This eight-week course is for students that have taken our Intro to Metal Shop course.  Students will expand their knowledge of welding and fabrication. They will have the opportunity to create a small furniture object, while they refine the skills they've already learned and encounter new techniques and methodologies.

Students should come to class with a proposal of what they wish to create and accomplish*.  The instructor will then approve the design or suggest modifications. Designed as a “hands-on” exploration, the goal is that students will leave each class having completed a project which introduces them to a part of the shop or a technique used in metal fabrication.

In addition to a review and ellaboration of the basics covered in Intro, new techniques will be covered each class meeting during the first half of the course.  The final portion of the class will be spent working on individual projects of the student's design with the supervision of the instructor. All students will receive a 8-day shop pass (an $800 value) to work on their projects outside of class.  The more ambitious the project, the more time outside class students should expect to spend.  Passes expire two weeks after the end date of the class.

*Storage for projects is limited and your project may not exceed three feet cubed.  Storage will be provided until two weeks after the end date of the course.  While some metal for practice will be on hand, students are responsible for purchasing metal for their own projects.

Students are required to come to all classes dressed appropriately for welding; this includes heavy cotton pants (jeans are fine), leather boots and a long-sleeve shirt of cotton or wool. All clothing and footwear with polyester, nylon or other synthetic fibers is to be avoided (the fibers will melt if heated and will stick to your skin).  Students must also bring their own safety gear (gloves, eye protection) and measuring gear (combo square, tape measure, and scribe).  If you would like to purchase a basic kit containing these items, please email Learn@3rdward.com.  A kit of additional tools for students to keep is covered by the material fee.

Intro to Metal Shop is a prerequisite for this course. If you have comparable metal shop experience, please email Learn@3rdward.com to inquire about waiving the prerequisite.
