Intermediate Painting
Students will explore oil painting through an exercise that focuses on creating an abstracted composition through layers of color and texture. The course will build upon technical skills learned in Painting I, including underpainting and glazing, and will include additional technical lessons in compositional balance, alla prima technique, and studies in using different media to create washes/glazes and impasto. Demonstrations will be followed by guided sessions and accompanied by lectures on relevant theory, history, and technique.
Over six weeks, students will tackle the formal and conceptual challenges of implied subject matter, composition, texture, and light. A well-known Baroque painting serves as a starting point from which students will follow a methodical approach to abstraction that will unravel as each step provokes new creative decisions.
This course is designed to further develop basic comprehension of color theory, and knowledge of techniques in underpainting and glazing. Students should already be familiar with the various properties of color, including hue, value, and saturation, and the way that each affects the other. Students should have an understanding of how to mix colors in order to achieve an accurate match. Students should have experience working texturally with a limited palette in order to arrive at a duochromatic underpainting, as well as experience in creating translucent glazes in order to manipulate color using wet-on-dry paint application.
Students will be responsible for bringing supplies on the first day of class. Those who have taken our Painting I class will already have many of these items on hand. For a complete materials list, click here.
Instructor
Yotam Zohar is an internationally-based artist who has worked in painting, film, and animation. His figurative paintings have been exhibited and hang in private and public collections across the United States and in Europe, where he received training in the Flemish technique. Yotam's Master's thesis comprised a forged exhibition of original fakes; he considered pursuing a career as an art forger, but instead played it safe and moved to New York to try to make it as an artist. An avid art scholar and technical instructor, Yotam has taught and lectured on painting, drawing, and film. He continues to work as a painter and gallerist.
