Intermediate Jewelry // Pre-fab Prong Setting

Beginner jewelry designers frequently want to incorporate prong setting into their work. However, this elaborate technique can leave many students feeling overwhelmed. There is an economical and time saving option for those who like the look of prong setting, but don't yet have the time or skills to manufacture the setting themselves - Commercial Prong Setting. By purchasing a stone and a matching setting, students can easily fabricate very complex looking objects in minimal time. The techniques covered in this class are industry standard, most jewelry available in stores today is fabricated using standard commercial prong settings.

In this 2 week workshop students will learn how to solder a commercial prong setting onto a hand fabricated piece, such as a pendant, ring or bracelet, including tips and tricks to avoid over heating. Then they will learn the simple technique of setting a stone in a prong setting, and the appropriate tools for trouble shooting along the way. Students can choose from a small variety of stones and setting shapes; and though we will only finish one setting in class, students can use the skills from this class to complete additional prong settings at a later date. Each student will receive one complimentary pass redeemable for supervised studio time outside of class, for any extra finishing that needs to happen beyond the 2 weeks of class time (dates subject to availability).
