Intermediate Drawing // Soft Pastel & Charcoal

Students will develop fluency in drawing by continuing to tackle the problem of observation through a focus on exploring new materials. Students will be introduced to charcoal and conte as a means of manipulating their approach to color and value. The technical challenge of exploring these new media will be added to the task of accurate observation. Skills will be built by working from still-life and figurative models, and by exploring form, gesture, light, and texture in each. Instruction will be supplemented by demonstrations and lectures on relevant theory, history, and technique.

Students will work from still life models for the first half of the course, exploring new materials and getting a feel for the ways each allows them to express the visual sensation of the subject they are depicting. Throughout this process students will continue to build their observational techniques, reinforcing the connection between the hand and the eye, and un-learning to superimpose pre-conceived iconography onto their drawings. In the second half of the course, students will have the opportunity to build familiarity with the new materials by applying them to a figurative subject. Students are invited to bring new creative decisions to their observations as well.

The course will build upon observational techniques learned in Intro to Drawing: students should be familiar with a range of techniques that allow them to accurately measure and record proportion, foreshortening, and other spatial relationships. Students should be familiar with a range of techniques for expressing value and texture, including hatching and blending. Students should also possess a basic understanding of perspective, the behavior of light, and the human form.

Instructor
Yotam Zohar is an internationally-based artist who has worked in painting, film, and animation. His figurative paintings have been exhibited and hang in private and public collections across the United States and in Europe, where he received training in the Flemish technique. Yotam's Master's thesis comprised a forged exhibition of original fakes; he considered pursuing a career as an art forger, but instead played it safe and moved to New York to try to make it as an artist. An avid art scholar and technical instructor, Yotam has taught and lectured on painting, drawing, and film. He continues to work as a painter and gallerist.
