This six-week course is designed for illustrators, cartoonists, and other artists who seek to evolve beyond drawing and begin incorporating a variety of mixed media into their work. Each two-week segment is devoted to a different artistic medium: watercolor/gouache, India and Sumi ink, and pastel (using white highlights on pastel paper to create a three-dimensional look). Students emerge from this course with a wider net of approaches to creating original artworks using these media. Some studio sessions will involve live models, miniatures, reference photos, or a combination thereof.
Instructor
Josh Bayer is a Cartoonist/Artist/illustrator living in Harlem, NY. He began publishing his comics in 1988. Since then, he has collaborated with Raymond Pettibon, been listed in Best American Comics, been rejected by The Yes Men’s Fake NY Times project. He is an advisor at the Sequential Art Workshop and a teacher in schools all over New York.
In 2011 and 2012, his work has appeared in a half dozen anthologies ranging from Philidelphia’s Secret Prison to Croatia’s Komicaze Comics Anthology. His solo comic work credits have included Suspect Device, and Raw Power available on Retrofit Comics Imprint.
He is hard at work on multiple projects including the political comic Bam Bam and the Barbarians with co-writer Joaquin deLapuente; the crime thriller,The Dark Side of The Street, with his brother Samuel Bayer and a series of auto-biographical tributes to dead and gone comics writers and artists. The first of these was Rom, dedicated to the tragic life of Bill Mantlo. Additionally, he has contributed conceptual art to HBO’s Rome, New Lines Cinema’s Nightmare on Elm Street and about two dozen music videos.
