Furniture Design/Build // Part Two

In this course, participants will arrive at the first class meeting with a project design in-hand. This can be a simple sketch, a scaled measured drawing or a model. Critical aspects of each design, material choices and individual building strategies will be discussed.

Practice of more advanced woodworking processes will build on previous experience.  Individual skill level will help the maker gauge their construction schedule as each will work closely with the instructor towards the goal of completing their project by the end of the course.

The cost of each individual project will vary based on material choice; there are beautiful sheet goods or domestic hardwoods that allow one to build an elegant night stand for under $100.00, or exotic species that will quadruple the expense. Students will be given advice regarding materials and a fabrication scheduled based on the complexity of their project and skill level.

Students will be responsible for storage of their projects in the Pro Member shop.  Thus, size of projects will be constrained by available storage options.  We recommend contacting the shop team prior to enrolling in this course, especially if you intend to work on a larger project.  Smaller projects are encouraged, as they can more readily be completed by the end of the course.

Prerequisites: Participants must have taken Furniture Design/Build 1, or Intro to Woodworking and one other 3rd Ward Woodworking 2 course.  In lieu of completing these courses, interested individuals with prior woodworking experience may be admitted pending a portfolio review by the instructor. Please email learn@3rdward.com to inquire about this option.

Participants will be expected to bring the following items:

Safety goggles or glasses
Pencils
Marking knife (a standard utility blade or box cutter will suffice)
Tape measurer
A sharpened set of chisels (at least four: 1/4”, 1/2”, 3/4”, 1”)
Woodworker’s Mallet
A 12" combo square.

Other tools and supplies will be provided. Students may also purchase a tool kit directly from 3rd Ward. Please email learn@3rdward.com prior to the registration deadline to arrange for a kit.

Instructors
Jim Hill received his MFA in design from Cranbrook Academy of Art (1987) and a Fulbright Fellowship to Finland, where he was an Artist-in-Residence at Taidateollinen Korkeokoulu, Helsinki's internationally recognized school for art and design. He has also received grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Empire State Craft Alliance. Having an established business for almost two decades in New York City, he continues to develop his individual design identity and invests a high level of craftsmanship in each project.  "In collaboration with my clients, I explore a contemporary language of form that moves away from the idiomatic character of most studio woodworking.  My furniture and interiors while well made, are about the diagrammatic and lyrical language of building and architecture."

Buck Jackson is a designer, drafter and craftsperson in the field of architecture.  He currently teaches design at the City College of New York.
