DIY Super 8 Filmmaking
This class is for people who are tired of pixels and want to get dirty and direct with the moving image. In this class students will learn how to work with experimental techniques explored by some of the pioneers of super 8 film. We will focus on non-traditional techniques for film and present possible alternatives to the digital effects that we have been inundated with. But above all students will learn to do it all on the cheap and at home.
We will cover how to transfer, develop and edit film all in the comfort of your own bathroom. After the basics we will focus on analog effects like solarizing film and painting/etching directly on the film. Each person will develop and splice their work into a final short film. The class will be complemented by screenings of works by Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas and others.
A materials fee covers film and processing chemicals.
Instructor
Nathan Maxwell Cann is a New York based artist who's always eager to dip his hands into a vat of chemicals, though he also frequently dabbles in digital media. When not in Brooklyn he can be found in the Lower East Side teaching at Nest+, a gifted and talented elementary school, or working at Invisible-Exports, a tiny subversive art gallery featuring most notably Genesis P-Orridge. Some describe him as one who sucks dark, frothy milk from the fat tit of mystery.
Zia Anger is a filmmaker from Ithaca, NY. She has an MFA in Studio from The School of the Art Institute in Chicago. She works on and makes all different types of films, and occasionally acts in them too. Although her first love is coffee her second is 16mm film. She lives and works in Hudson, NY.
