Directing the Camera // Visual Storytelling
This course will benefit both live-action filmmakers and animators. Learn to express your cinematic stories in a more unique and visually dynamic manner. In this interactive hands-on class, you will learn simple techniques to expand your visual options as a filmmaker, while also becoming more efficient during production.
Learn how to choose the right shot size, shot type, height, angle, two and three-dimensional composition and lens type to best convey the information and emotions of your narrative. Discover how blocking, deep staging, perspective lines and the rule of thirds can make your frame more cinematic. Create high production value with a small budget with various camera movement techniques. Shifts, swishes, lead-ins, hand-offs, reveals, key-frames, partial and full framing transitions will add visual interest without breaking the bank.
Maintaining the illusion of continuous space and time keeps your audience involved in your story. Match on action, the 180 degree rule, eye-lines, 20% rule, pacing, rhythm, prop and lighting continuity techniques help avoid common filmmaking mistakes. Planning for the editing room, shot-lists, storyboards, floor plans and efficient scheduling make for a smooth production. Learn how thinking “out of order” makes for a more orderly shoot and a happier editing experience.
This workshop can benefit directors at all levels. Both beginner and experienced filmmakers and animators are all welcome. Please bring your own video camera. It can be as basic as a smart-phone camera, Flip Cam or any consumer camera, although the ideal camera will have a zoom lens.
