Chasing & Repousse Workshop

Chasing & repousse is a method of shaping, drawing and sculpting with malleable metal to create images and textures in relief form by means of stamping and embossing. The process can be used on solid metal, but more commonly sheet metal. Examples of chasing & repousse can be seen throughout history in just about every culture, applied to both jewelry and hollow-ware. Chasing is the process of working texture and line on the front of the metal while repousse refers to the process of pushing up the metal from the back of the piece to achieve detail in higher relief. The tools used for this process are a hammer, assorted steel punches (liners, embossers, and textured matting tools), and pitch which is a medium used to support the metal and hold it in place to create the controlled dents.

In this course we will cover the following techniques: contouring, low-relief chasing, high-relief chasing, and chasing on solid metal. We will discuss safety when working with pitch, benefits of a chasing hammer, and how to make the chasing tools from raw metal. We will be practicing on copper sheet (22-18 gauge, approx: 1 mm) and solid pewter. Students are welcome to supply their own material but keep in mind it must be relatively malleable--nothing harder than mild steel. The scale we will be working on is under 6''x6'' however the technique can be applied to a much larger scale. Students are welcome to bring in their own designs and drawings, but this is a time consuming process.

Instructor
Preston Jones has traveled the world to enrich his arsenal of metalworking skills. From learning to chase at a Buddhist temples, to studying in the academic setting of SUNY New Paltz, to making singing monk bowls on the streets of Bangkok, and silversmithing in the studios of FIT, Preston draws on these milleniums old skills to glorify the indulgences of contemporary life. His enthusiasm for hollowware and chasing is in full bloom as seen in his most recent accomplishments. Using travel tales as his inspiration, he builds from an array of global influences to create metalwork which brings the silk route to the NYC stoop. Check out his work on facebook.
