Basic Bicycle Mechanics

Learn how to adjust, maintain, and fix almost every part of your bicycle. This course will cover everything from patching an inner tube to adjusting limit screws on your derailleur. You will become the envy of your less bicycle-able friends, and suddenly become quite popular when their bikes need fixing.

The class will cater to any problems or questions the students have about their bikes. At the minimum, we will cover how to change a flat, adjust handlebars and saddle for a comfortable ride, clean and lube a chain, and adjust brakes and derailleurs. We will also talk about how to safely ride in traffic, different riding styles, different types of bicycles, and a little history to tie it all together.

It is recommended that you bring your own bicycle to work on.

Instructor
Steven Ma is a jack-of-all-trades with one of those trades being a bicycle mechanic. He developed his skills at a not-for-profit bicycle co-op in Los Angeles where he was a head mechanic for two years. He has seen and fixed almost every type of bicycle, from high end carbon road bikes to amateur welded tall bikes. His other hobby is building sound systems for bikes and starting random dance parties.
