Advanced Digital Photography // Concepts and Critique
Advanced Digital Photography will deviate from a technique-driven class, and will jump into portfolio development and critique of photographs. Students will learn photographic vocabulary to enhance their critical dialogue of the photographic image, and two- dimensional design principles. Each week students will be given assignments geared toward enhancing their photographic techniques while promoting investigation of self and surroundings.
Each session of class will begin with a slideshow of different classical or contemporary photographers, image-makers, or unique genres within photography and cinema. Students will critically assess their own work and that of their peers on a weekly basis, driven by the assignments from the instructor. Themes will include color, storytelling, documentary, portraiture, and more. Students are encouraged to find a source for printing their photographs for the final class. Computer screens and projectors don't compare to the printed image!
Students should have a strong understanding of their cameras, and some access to photo software tools such as Lightroom, Photoshop, or even Gimp. A tripod and cable release is strongly recommended for this class. Previous courses at 3rd Ward are strongly recommended (including, but not limited to Intro or Intermediate Photography, Lightroom or Photoshop courses, etc.). Cameras are not limited to digital SLRs, but in light of the restrictions of time, film cameras are not recommended. Please note that students having the capacity to have new images prepared for each class will fuel the discussion and strengthen the course for all involved, not to mention making your teacher proud!
