Lisa Kirk: Revolution!, THIS FRIDAY

We found an opening event that's definitely worth sniffing out...

SmartSpaces is pleased to present:

Lisa Kirk: Revolution!

Opening Night, Friday, May 7, 5:30 to 8 p, 1133 Broadway, between 25th and 26th Streets

Lisa Kirk's new installation Revolution! inverts our perception of reality and addresses the marketing of transgressive political and social practices.  Through interviews with anonymous journalists, activists, and political radicals, Lisa Kirk developed the original Revolution! fragrance based on their olfactory memories of revolution. She crafted the final scent to evoke the odors of smoke, gasoline, tear gas, burnt rubber and decaying flesh, packaged in limited edition as a precious metal pipe bomb.

The installation features an upside-down fragrance lab and anarchist hideout in one window, and a ransacked store display in the other. SmartSpces' signage and free cell phone audio guides provide passersby instant access to information about the work and the space, generously donated by Kew Management.

RSVP rsvp@smartspaces.org

For more information visit http://smartspaces.org/revolution.

On display through June 1 in the windows of 1133 Broadway, between 25th and 26th Street.

Williamsburg Walks Public Art Competition // Now Accepting Proposals!

Williamsburg Walk is looking for public art that supports the theme of “Rethink Your Public Space”. For many of us, the streets are literally our front yards. But all too often our streets fail to offer a pleasant space, a place to socialize and bond with our community, to recreate, and to feel safe when walking or riding a bike.  In response to these conditions, they are seeking work that engages the issues of how public space can encourage substantive community engagement in fun and creative ways, how art can play a role in activating public space, and how the dominance of certain modes of transportation over others on streets can be reduced.

Please send a short proposal summary to Annie de Mayo, the exhibit coordinator, at public.art.williamsburgwalks@gmail.com by Friday, May 28th at midnight. You can expect to get a final answer from us by Wednesday, June 2nd.

More more information, guidlines for submissions and installation specifications, head to: http://www.williamsburgwalks.org/publicart/
