MEMBER PROFILE // Matthew Murphy's Photography Channels The Essence of Dance

Dancer: Kiira Schmidt photographed for Broadway.com's Gotta Dance!, styled by David Withrow, Hair and Makeup by Ariel Vega. Photographed at 3rd Ward.

It's not surprising that Matthew Murphy creates amazing dance photography. He's graced the same stages as the dancers that he now captures with his lens, and he's exercised the same extraordinary dedication and drive that made him a great dancer to become an equally virtuosic photographer.

"I spent my entire adolescence training to become a professional ballet dancer," Murphy says. At 17 that devotion paid off when he became a member of the American Ballet Theatre, one of the world's leading ballet companies. A few years later illness forced him to retire from dancing, but he soon picked up a DSLR and found a complementary passion. "The similarities between art forms were apparent to me from the start," he says. "They are both about exploring space and people through movement and light. My work as a photographer focuses a lot on identity and movement, whether physical or emotional."

He may be behind the camera rather than at the barre, but Murphy still approaches his work with the heart and mind of a dancer. "I find the art of working with a portrait subject to be much like a pas de deux, where trust is more important than anything," he says. "Whomever I'm photographing has to be willing to take my hand and let me lead them. Likewise, I have to listen to their impulses because I may find that their energy leads me to a more exciting breakthrough."

Hit the jump to read more about Murphy and check out some of his excellent work.

When Murphy first joined 3rd Ward he was worried that commuting from the Upper East Side would be draining, but he's found that trek is worth it. "3rd Ward has been an amazing setting for me to expand my style," he says. "I always find myself energized to take the train out in the mornings and find new ways to use the space." He's spent time in all of the photo studios, but you'll likely find him in Studio B. "It's the most malleable for the type of work I do," he explains. "One day I'll open up the blackout curtains and let the natural light shine in for headshots, only to close them off the following day for a shoot with a dance company." 3rd Ward has also inspired Murphy to experiment and explore. "The reasonable price point of a membership has allowed me to feel more adventurous when it comes to trying new things," he says. "I've really been able to expand my work to not only include environmental portraiture but studio work as well, which is extremely valuable when creating press materials for different theater and dance companies."

DISPLACED, an exhibition of Murphy's work featuring "a series of 32 portraits that explores what happens to a dancer when you take away virtuosic movement," is on display through December 30 at Dance New Amsterdam.  He also recently started Gotta Dance!, a new portrait series for Broadway.com that features dancers styled and dressed in outfits inspired by the current show that they are in.

To kick off 2012 he'll be starting another portrait project, a "series of diptychs exploring the emphasis the ballet world places on physical perfection," and continuing his work on evening-length multimedia musical 35MM, a collaboration with composer Ryan Scott Oliver. "He has created songs inspired my images of mine, and I have created images based on songs of his," Murphy says. The two are more than half way to their Kickstarter goal to fund a cast recording and a live production in March. Help out and you can score everything from a digital download of the recording to first amateur licensing rights to put on your own production.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS // Hand-Typed, Letter-Pressed Journal Harlequin Creature Seeks All Kinds Of Print Media

There are tons of literary and cultural journals out there asking for submissions, but you won't find many that'll treat your work with the same level of hands-on care as Harlequin Creature. The journal's cover is crafted by letter press, and every page of every copy is hand-typed on a vintage typewriter. No photocopying or inkjets here. The Harlequin Creature crew produces each copy of their journals through "typing bees," where Smith Coronas, Underwoods and Royals bang away and carefully placed keystrokes forge every letter.

After selling out of their first issue, which came out back in the fall, Harlequin Creature is looking for submissions for the followup. They welcome "any printable media is welcome, i.e. prose, poetry, sheet music, collage work, etc.," and are asking for prose between 500 and 1,500 words and no more than 3 poems. The deadline is February 10, or January 13 if you'd like them to return your piece with suggested changes by January 27.

For a little more info on the spirit of Harlequin Creature, here's a quote from their website:

this is a journal sure to be unconventional in today's overwhelmingly digital age, and i think, at the same time, very much in touch with a nostalgia for an earlier era, when the factories of pittsburgh and detroit were still bumpin' and steel was in. with a circle of friends that spans from los angeles to new york, every single journal is hand typed on high quality paper, and the covers will all be set by a heavy, centuries old letter press in ann arbor, michigan. each copy is then hand bound, and a limited number include artwork by a featured artist.

Check out some more images of their first issue and army of typewriters after the jump.

ESSENTIAL EVENT // 3rd Ward Hosts Lie-Nielsen For a Day of Hand Tools and Woodworking Fun

If microplanes get you all hot and bothered and you like nothing more than a flawless dovetail, you'll want to clear your calendar for January 6th and 7th, when Lie-Nielsen Toolworks swoops into town to teach you about hand tools.

Lie-Nielsen began in Maine in 1981 with the goal of producing high-quality American-made tools. They now produce more than 50 types of saws, planes, scrapers, shavehorses and more, all out of high-quality metals like ductile iron and manganese bronze. These are materials that are meant not to rust or dull, so that your pretty little saw (seriously, these look really nice) will last for years, possibly even generations.

Of course, they'll explain all this and much more better than we can, and possibly even engage in some showdown fun like they did with former 3rd Ward member David Yepez, who actually had a dovetail competition with a master at Lie-Nielsen's headquarters.

If that's not enough to get you excited, there will also be demonstrations by fellow toolmakers Tools for Working Wood, Brese Plane, MS Bickford, and Daed Toolworks as well as Exotic Lumber. We're anticipating a fun few days of learning, inspiration, and a healthy number of jokes about wood (hehe--sorry, NYE recovery's been slow going.) RSVP if you want in.

YOUR DAILY INSIGHT // As Told By: Bret Easton Ellis

Welcome back, folks. Now get 2012 moving with one from Mr. American Psycho himself, Bret Easton Ellis--a casual suggestion on how (not) to manage your creative edge:

I'm not a big believer in disciplined writers. What does discipline mean? The writer who forces himself to sit down and write for seven hours every day might be wasting those seven hours if he's not in the mood and doesn't feel the juice. I don't think discipline equals creativity.

GREAT CAUSE // Help Uproar Art Help Brooklyn Kids

Max Goodman helps young artists make moulds of their fingers at Uproar's table at the Maker Faire

We understand: It's a tough time to be donating We know your hearts are in the right place, but we also know holiday travel and gift-giving can be huge strains on your wallets. Still, we have a worthy cause that could absolutely use your help. Uproar Art teaches classes and gives private lessons in the arts, visual and performing; teaching low-cost classes in crafts, comic book-making, organic sculpture, and recycled art. Directed by our own jewelry instructor Max Goodman, the organization focuses on individual attention and teaching technical skills, as well as using sustainable materials.

This year, Uproar got its 501-c-3 non-profit incorporation, so they're hoping to expand their programs to do school residencies in Brooklyn. We don't have to tell you folks that this could be huge for the community--it would offer kids a creative outlet that the schools may not be able to provide otherwise (and many of us know how ruthlessly some schools are slashing their art programs altogether.)

Of course, since it's an official non-profit, any donation you make before the end of the 2011 (one-week alert!) will help you out with your taxes. But more than that, you'll be giving kids a chance to learn how to make things and maybe even have a hand in grooming the next generation of 3rd Warders.

All donations can be done straight through here.

YOUR DAILY INSIGHT // As Told By: Ralph Waldo Emerson

Society everywhere is in conspiracy against every one of it's members. The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is it's aversion. One who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.

Today, we're kicking off with #15 through #11, tomorrow #10 through #6 and Friday, the top 5 articles on 3rdWard.com according to you.
