Installation Students Bring Their Art Home

ART TAKING OVER HOME

Saturday, March 26, 2011 // 3pm - 3am

201 Montrose Avenue, Apartment 2A

This Saturday, a group of students in our Installation: Creating an Environment class will present an immersive and innovative show that lets Art take over the Home through sound, video, painting, illustration, sculpture, interactive, performance, taste and smell, potential ghosts and -- of course -- collaborative installation.

What is Home? How has "adult Home" been influenced by "childhood Home"? How has the concept of Home been sacrificed for something like location, location, location? How have rodents or leaks or bed bugs compromised the concept of Home?

Plus, take a seat and share a story about your Home, your neighbor's secrets, that truck that idles outside your window all night.

Want more? Learn more about installation and its exciting possibilities. Sign up for Installation: Creating an Environment here. Class starts April 3rd!

THIS WEEKEND // SITE Fest 2011: 3rd Ward Hub Space Schedule

This weekend, 3rd Ward will be a curated hub space for SITE Fest, a two-day interdisciplinary event highlighting the diversity of performance in Bushwick.

3rd Ward is featuring entirely performance documentation, a first in SITE Fest history. See below for the schedule. Admission is a suggested donation of $5 per hub show. Visit the SITE Fest website to see the full schedule of events at all locations.

BEVERLY FRE$H LIVE AT
CHECKPOINT CHARLIE

BEVERLY FRE$H / Sat: 1:30pm and Sun: 5:30pm
Through these specific works I define what I have established as the “forced audience.” Often among tourists, each of these performances employs the variable of chance, and the role of the collective observer becomes participatory.

documentation of Flag
Gavin Campbell / Sat: 1:30pm and Sun: 5:30pm
Living and growing up on the Irish border has been a constant influence on the artist’s practice and life. In the performance piece ‘Flag’ Gavin is trying to express the difficulties of this. In a desperate attempt to become, feel or prove his ‘Irishness’ Gavin attempts to consume the Irish tri-colour.

Freeze

Shahar Marcus / Sat: 1:30pm and Sun: 5:30pm
Performers sit around a table & squeeze the juice out of hundreds of oranges. The juice pours out under the table onto the naked body of the artist until he is completely soaked.

Soak
Shahar Marcus / Sat: 1:30pm and Sun: 5:30pm
Two figures play chess with large chessmen made of ice. The passage of time is marked by the melting of the ice and the movement of the huge hourglass filled with Styrofoam balls that revolves with every move of the game.

Induction
Stefan Adamski / Sat: 1:30pm and Sun: 5:30pm
Induction is an ironic video experiment. I use my basic experience connected with hypnosis to persuade the audience to treat & understand this particular video as a masterpiece.

Sensible Horizons
Alfonso Arzapalo / Sat: 2:30pm and Sun: 6:30pm
The Sensible Horizons performance series is the consequence of listening to a given space and responding through bodily presence and gesture.

...stacking...stacking...stacking...
OR trapped inside pixels

Sarah Buckius / Sat: 2:30pm and Sun: 6:30pm

The ManosBuckius Cooperative

The ManosBuckius Cooperative (The MBC) /
Sat: 2:30pm and Sun: 6:30pm

Part 3: The Mnemonic Fool Series
Michael Freeman / Sat: 3:30pm
The Mnemonic Fool series has had many incarnations. Here we have a nude man confronting his personal fears directly through choreographed gestural sequences & interactions with the public.
This is intended for mature audiences only.

Documentation
Aidana Rico Chávez and Ignacio Pérez Pérez / Sat: 5:30pm and Sun: 2:30pm
Recent performance art works by Aidana Rico
Chávez and Ignacio Pérez Pérez (Venezuela)

Social Shedding
Hoyun Son / Sat: 5:30pm and Sun: 2:30pm
A site-responsive performance with a garment constructed from traditional Korean funereal fiber interwoven with a spiraling zipper, allowing the dress to alter shape & transform. The performance presented is performed in a shopping mall in the downtown Portland, OR resulting in the performer being escorted out by security guards.

LitteraUrban
LitteraUrban / Sat: 5:30pm and Sun: 2:30pm
LitteraUrban is a multidisciplinary adventure that explores the city images where common people can be integrated into a dance performance.

Finish Line
Werther Germondari / Sat: 5:30pm and Sun: 2:30pm
An unexpected man informs drivers going along a road about the end of a nonexistent race...

Performance Virus
Iiuba / Sat: 6:30pm and Sun: 1:30pm
Virus is investigating over the ‘buying bulimy’, that affects the daily-life models and the art world as well. An ironical reflection over value of works and value of selling.

Return of the Pheasant
Carolin Clausnitzer / Sat: 7:30pm & Sun: 7:30pm
The artist managed to temporarily revitalize a former popular but now ruinous woodland restaurant. Through use of well-directed public media, she was able to reach many inhabitants and reawake their interest in the location. The feedback was impressive.

Sara Conde: Beatiful Chaos in Athens and Time Capsule
Sara Conde / Sat: 7:30pm and Sun: 7:30pm
Sara Conde will give a lecture and provide visual documentation on two recent artworks where she has combined drawing, painting, printmaking, installation and performance: Beautiful Chaos for 3///3, and Time Capsule.

What was your first Drink-n-Draw like?

A lawyer by day, a talented artist by night. For many people, Drink-n-Draw is the first time you ever hear about and visit 3rd Ward. We wondered what hundreds of newbies experience, so last week, we sent writer Vann Alexandra to get her perspective on what's fast becoming a must-do for every New Yorker.

It was bitterly cold last Friday night, and it could have been like any other Friday night, in which we found ourselves going to the same old bars, meeting the same old people. But instead, we decided to give our creative sides a crack at something both artistically-enticing and still paBeer in one hand, writing utensil in the other.rty-worthy – the “Drink-n-Draw Overdrive.” Six hours of free beer and drawing? Sounded like a stellar way to warm up.

We soon realized that it wasn’t an event just for artists – there were lawyers, students, business people. They all came because DnD’s an event where people get to stir their creative juices within a casual setting with coworkers, friends, partners, and romantic prospects. Plus, who wouldn’t dig the free booze?

Up the stairs and just before the main drawing room, the refreshments area smelled like a mighty mix of Mexican meets homey café. On one side was the ¡dpm! empanada station and on the other side the ladies from The Sisters Three served up freshly brewed beverages (chipotle cocoa flavored!). And then, of course, the bar was conveniently located smack in the middle.

The early birds had landed all the good spots. But many were content just standing up, leaning against the walls, or like us, sitting Indian-style on the floor. (Later on in the night, management decided to open up another room for space purposes.)

Side conversations. The room was tight, but intimate. We were all inches away from each other, drawing and drinking together. And we were able to strike up conversation in between the drawing breaks.

We quickly realized we weren’t the only first-timers at DnD. Towards the beginning of the class, we sat next to three 20-somethings who work together at the Norwegian Consulate. They said they are always on the hunt for new kinds of work outings and DnD sounded unique. Another girl a few seats away said she came because DnD seemed like the perfect Friday pregame.

We then moved to a table towards the back and befriended some girls who currently go to art school. They first heard 3rd Ward because of the awesome parties, but then realized there were classes, too. They said they were really into the DnD vibe – people were able walk around instead of being confined to a chair like any other typical “class” environment. The live music helped the vibe, too.

While roaming around, there was one person we Working on her intriguing cutouts.were really curious about: a lady standing in the back doing cut-out images of the models. She’s a sculptor based in Queens who has been coming to 3rd Ward classes and DnDs for years. She was a pleasure to meet!

Throughout the night, we watched party animals in the corner making a beer pyramid; an older couple who made every movement in unison; a guy in the corner swaying to the music while drawing.

Drink-n-Draw wasn’t just about the art and models, but the people, too.
