Beekeeping in Brooklyn

Beekeeping in Brooklyn // An Interview with and by Beekeepers Jon Feldman & Brandon Hoy (with a little help from 3rd Ward Founder Jason Goodman)

Photography By Amir Ebrahami

Moments after this interview occurs, Jon Feldman and Brandon Hoy will put on full body beekeeper suits, appearing like a cross between a member of Yanni’s touring band circa 1984 and the extras from the “A Total Eclipse of the Heart” music video.

They don their sting-proof outfits to tend a hive that will soon be home to millions of bees. Jon and Brandon are part of the new Brooklyn renaissance occurring right under our nose. They are restaurateurs, beekeepers, picklers, or anything else that fosters the grassroots culinary explosion happening right now in our County of Kings.

Pim Palsgraaf // 2009 Summer Solo Show Artist

Pim Palsgraaf // 2009 Summer Solo Show Artist

By Devin Powers

3rd Ward’s 2009 Summer Solo Show Artist, Pim Palsgraaf, lives and works in the massive industrial sector of Rotterdam, the largest port city in Europe. “I have a love-hate relationship with the city,” says Palsgraaf. This ambivalence to city life reflects strongly in the images and objects he produces. His work falls into two related categories: his haunting paintings and drawings depicting the derelict industrial interiors of abandoned buildings in Eastern European cities after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and his current sculptural works made out of taxidermied mammals bizarrely bursting with parasitic shanty cities made from demolished architectural models. The subject of both periods of works is an outgrowth of a general interest and repulsion towards the urban environment, its austere ubiquity, its expansion and decay, as well as its effect on the natural world.

Interview with Antistrot

Antistrot // An Interview with David Elshout, Charlie Dronkers & Johan Kleinjan

By Ben Zoltowski

Angry gorillas, moaning siliconed honeys, masked velociraptors and astronauts sucking on rocketships -- either roleplayers in your weird and disquieting late-night ID excursions, or characters typically found helping to comprise the graphic, shitstorm landscape of an Antistrot mural. With its ever-expanding roster of unabashed comic-book-aping illustrators, painters, performance junkies and bands that would make Gwar proud, Antistrot is currently Rotterdam’s most notorious art collective. Originally born out of a blatant, mutual detest towards one Professor  trot at the Willem de Kooning Academy, the core members vowed to bind together -- and end that unquestioned tyranny that is the strange expectation to imbue art with any kind of morality.

Rat Tails and Curve Balls // An Interview with Amir Ebrahimi

Not soon after the dust had cleared from Amir’s fashion shoot for 3rd Ward, and only a few hours removed from him being surrounded by honey bees while shooting the cover to this very publication, we had a chance to sit down with Amir Ebrahimi in his 3rd Ward Office. Amir has been a member of 3rd Ward since May 2008, and although most people here consider Amir a photographer, turns out, he’s much, much more.
