The Ultimate Digital Design Showdown: Cut & Paste Call for Entries!

If you’ve got shaky hands on the mouse, go cross-eyed at the sight of a big screen and a bigger audience, or shudder at the thought of people viewing your every vector…then move along.

But if you’re a designer with a killer competitive edge and the stomach to compete with the world’s best in full view of a live audience, then listen up.

Cut&Paste is now accepting entries to its 2010 Digital Design Competition. Submit your 2D, 3D, or Motion Design work by visiting the Cut&Paste Call for Competitors page. If your portfolio is picked, you’ll advance to a test round, which then leads to the Worldwide Championships at Webster Hall.

Cut&Paste’s 2010 tour is its biggest yet, with stops in New York, Sao Paolo, San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, Bangkok, Seoul, and Tokyo. The best talents converge onstage in New York in a fast-paced, high-intensity, Olympically-epic competitive spectator sport. Withstanding the pressure of judges hovering, music blaring, and minutes ticking, city champs will put their reputations on the line and battle one another for the worldwide crown.

3rd Ward is proud to be a local partner in this unique and -- let’s face it -- totally sick event, and will be updating you on NYC Cut&Paste events. But until then…If you’ve got the portfolio and the nerves, this is your chance to launch yourself into the digital design stratosphere.

USA Deadline for Entry is 9/10. Click here to apply. Good luck and godspeed.

ASK A 3rd WARD TEACHER: Kimberly Hall, textile artist, milliner, medieval time-traveler

With a Master’s in Textile Futures from Central St Martins and a thesis in thermochromic embroidery, you’d think 3rd Ward instructor, Kimberly Hall, got her start in some futuristic fabric think tank. Not so! Before going to the Museum School in Boston, Kim worked at a replica medieval village in Florida, where she learned enameling, weaving, basketweaving and pottery, and laid the groundwork for the diverse artistic background she boasts today.

Now Kimberly is bringing her education and experience to 3rd Ward with two August classes: Feltmaking from Scratch and Hatmaking Workshop. Enroll today to ensure your spot, and learn more about Kim in the interview below.

Kimberly Hall: I teach textile classes: dyeing, printing, felting. I'm also trying a new millinery class this summer. I’m really looking forward to teaching hatmaking; hats are one of my favorite things to make!

3W: What is created in your classes?

KH: In the natural dyeing and heat printing classes we do a lot of experimentation. It’s so interesting to watch students new to certain techniques dive in and give it a go. It’s about trying new things with the dye recipes. Everyone wants to learn the "right" way to do it, but as soon as they start combining ingredients, they want to see what happens when they break the rules.

3W: Do you teach anywhere else?
KH: I'm going to be the guest critic for the FIT Associate Apparel show this fall. I've also been a guest lecturer at MICA in Baltimore.

3W: What do you do outside of teaching?
KH: I'm an apparel designer for Coach right now. I also design all the graphics for a record label called The Land Of (http://www.thelandof.org). My website is http://www.nottene.net and I'm also working on a new project that will be shown this fall at the awesome Textile Arts Center. That website is http://www.virginknitters.com. I'm so excited for this new project, I've been working on it since 2007! It's a collection of scarves made by people who have never knit before, and I have been teaching people to knit in exchange for their first scarf. I guess it really ties in to why I love to teach.

3W: What is it like being such a creative, out of the box person and then working for a corporation like Coach?
KH: Sometimes it's a nice release to have the support of a big company; the limitations of working corporate can require me to think out of the box in order to get the best results.

3W: Can you tell me more about the Virgin Knitters Project?
KH: The project began in response to an idea I developed in my textiles masters program at Central Saint Martins. I was struggling with a project about luck. I made all sorts of printed pieces with images of items considered lucky: pickles, frogs, black-eyed peas, the number 7, eggs, and so on. But none of the finished pieces felt truly lucky to me. I realized that the luckiest thing I made was the first scarf I knit. It was such a labor of love to learn the process and I could only ever make one first scarf; it felt pretty special. Since then I've been teaching people how to knit in exchange for their scarf; they’re going to be exhibited and auctioned off this fall at the Textile Arts Center.

3W: The picture is great! Can you explain the piece you are wearing? Is it a neck scarf of sorts?
KH: It's a dickey! It's from a collection of lucky charms and it has all kinds of lucky objects printed on it...the Virgin Knitters Project I'm doing now stems from this collection.

3W: What sources do you usually draw your inspiration from / or have consistently been influenced by?
KH: Definitely inspiration comes from all over, but I have a special admiration for artists that create work in unexpected ways or are especially wrapped up in process or performance. Lately I'm loving the work of Riitta Ikonen and Mary Ping's projects; the textile work of Sonia Delaunay has been on my inspiration board as well. I try to keep a blog of inspiration as well as my regular sketchbooks.

3W: You said you got stuck on the theme of luck but that it eventually lead you to you the Virgin Knitters Project, something you have a lot of passion for. Any advice for those that encounter artists block and are struggling with ideas?
KH: There are so many good tricks to help! I like to make myself work out the lamest ideas I can think of - really get those out of my system. Helping someone else with their work can also be very freeing.
