MEMBER PURSUITS // Stéphane Hubert Exhibits Three New Lamps in "Leaf // Cloud"

3rd Ward members are always shedding light on new facets of design and creativity--sometimes literally. Designer and 3rd Ward member Stéphane Hubert has three exquisite lamps featured in "Leaf // Cloud: Nature Tangible & Transcendent," a group show of eco-conscious art and design at Fair Folks & a Goat on the Upper East Side. The exhibition kicked off on June 1 (check out some coverage of the opening on EcoSalon) and runs through June 27.

You might remember Hubert's elegant and expertly designed dark walnut table, which he created with the help of some other 3rd Ward members, or his pendulum lamp and stool, which we just featured in our Member Group Show.

For "Leaf // Cloud" he is presenting three new lamps in the show: an edison lamp made with pine and walnut, a LED lamp that uses reclaimed dark walnut and repurposed Christmas lights, and an "owl lamp" made with reclaimed maple, wenge, mahogany and dark walknut.

The exhibition celebrates the United Nations' World Environment Day, which took place on June 5. This year's theme was "Forests: Nature at Your Service," and the exhibition's title is take from John Ruskin's Modern Painters: "Between the earth and man arose the leaf. Between the heaven and man came the cloud. His life being partly as the falling leaf, and partly as the flying vapour."

You can check out Hubert's lamps as well as other eco-conscious art and design at Fair Folks & a Goat, which is at 7 East 88th Street and is open by appointment (drop them a line at thegoat@fairfolksandagoat.com).

ENTER THIS // Design a Plate and Help Fight Hunger in NYC

Heyyyy, designer extraordinaires out there: Want to gain recognition and win cash while also supporting a really good cause? Brooklyn-based online retailer UncommonGoods and New York's City Harvest are hosting a design contest that gives you a chance to do just that.

UncommonGoods--which specalizes in handmade and eco-friendly products--is soliciting designers for a new "Plate with Purpose" that will benefit City Harvest, a food rescue program that collects excess food from all segments of the food industry to held feed the city's hungry. This year alone, the program will collect 28 million pounds of food and deliver it to almost 600 community food programs across the city.

Designers can submit their entries for the "Harvest Plate" through June 16, and the community will be able to vote for the best designs through UncommonGood's new product voting app. City Harvest and UncommonGoods will then select a winner out of the five most popular designs at the end of June.

The winning designer gets a $1,000 award, recognition on UncommonGoods' website, and consideration for its holiday catalog. City Harvest will receive $5 for ever plate that is sold.

UncommonGoods has been an active supporter of community involvement and sustainability since the company was founded in 1999, donating more than $300,000 through their Better to Give program. Other Plates with Purpose have raised money for Alzheimer’s research, child abuse, local community organizations, AIDS organizations and other worthy causes.

"Last year we asked our customers to help us pick a new nonprofit to support, and City Harvest was a popular choice," says UncommonGoods' Julia Marden. "We really respected their work as a food rescue organization and the commitment they have to serving New York City."

Download the contest rules and template on Uncommongoods' contest page and start designing your Harvest Plate!

GO HERE NOW // Foodstalk: Your New Go-To for Local Eating

We assure you: It's way healthier for you than Facebook stalking. Go to Foodstalk.org now to "stalk" locally grown food—you can track down nearby farmer’s markets, restaurants that sell locally grown food, and your local CSA. Aspiring locavores can also find out what foods are currently in season with this handy chart.

Foodstalk was created last year by Tyler Mintz, an MFA student at the School of Visual Arts, as a way of increasing New Yorkers’ understanding of locally grown food. As Mintz describes it, Foodstalk is not just a website, but a "multi-platform event"—including visual campaigns, and an upcoming series of events. "The events are really the backbone of Foodstalk," he says. "The idea is to get food producers and local farmers to come speak about and share their food in a fun and entertaining fashion."

If you’ve never eaten locally before, Mintz says, "Foodstalk should be a great resource for getting started. Locate a restaurant that uses local ingredients and enjoy a meal there with some family or friends." He also recommends switching to a locally grown version of your favorite food—(apples are an easy one)—to taste the difference.

"My real hope and wish with Foodstalk is to change the conversation about locally grown food," Mintz says. "I want to make it more appealing both aesthetically, and as a proposition for people to jump on board. After all, eating food should be fun."

We're right there with you, Tyler.

P.S. All this talk about Foodstalk and eating right couldn't help but remind us of this. (We couldn't resist the nostalgia trip.)

TEACHER FEATURE // Elizabeth Waugh’s Beautiful, Disconcerting Photos

Fine art and fine dining! This Sunday, photographer and 3rd Ward instructor Elizabeth Waugh is throwing a dinner party of sorts to celebrate the release of her new book, "Pantheon." The June 12 event—tickets available here—features a five-course dinner prepared by chef Sung Uni Lee, as well as a gallery show of Waugh’s photos and live reading of the short stories in "Pantheon."

"Pantheon" is Waugh’s ninth annual book of fine art photography and short stories.  She describes it as "a curated experience of archetypes and myths" and "an intersection of the beautiful and disconcerting." She’s been putting together books since she was 17, and says, "Their production has been ritualistic for me."

The Chicago native studied Fine Art at the University of Southern California and honed her technical skills at Massachusetts’ Hallmark Institute of Photography before settling down in New York three years ago. Now, she says, "I have a studio in Brooklyn, and fashion clients such as Elie Tahari and Gilt Groupe. It's an amazing journey I'm on, and I am very grateful."

This fall, Waugh will be teaching a yearlong photography class at 3rd Ward called Branding Your Vision. She unreservedly calls teaching at 3rd Ward "the best thing in the world." Oh, we’re blushing.

NEW MEMBER WELCOME // Moe Rosen Brings the Funny

Moe Rosen is one of our newest co-working members, but he's been in New York for around a decade, working on "a variety of funny things."

A self-described "Canadian comedian-type," Rosen co-hosts "The Moe and Mary Show," a live call-in show on Manhattan cable access every Friday from 6-6:30pm that is now in its sixth year. Watch in on channel 56 at mmn.org.

Right now Rosen is working on a one-man show about changing his name, which he can legally do when he gets his U.S. citizenship in just a few days, on June 17.

And how did he find out about us? "The way I arrived at 3rd Ward must remain a secret," he says.

Mysterious! Whatever the reason, if you see him around, make sure to congratulate him on his new membership and impending citizenship.

Check out Rosen in this sort of amazing AirTran spot (he's on the right in blue):

MEMBER PROFILE // ANTHONY WINTERS ON BEAUTY

Fashion photographer and New Jersey resident Anthony Winters thinks nothing of crossing state lines to make it to his creative home of 3rd Ward, where he’s been a member for the past year-and-a-half.  His portfolio has gone from "noticeable" to "noticed" in that time, he says, all because of access to “awe-inspiring” photo studios and his participation in classes ranging from photography to business to makeup technique.

Anthony uses the space—which he likens to a “creative think tank with an energy that promotes good work”—for client meetings, fashion and celebrity photo shoots. With a self-taught background in shooting black and white film, he currently works mostly in digital with a Nikon D300 and 50mm lens.

His work is inspired and strongly influenced by his heroes Herb Ritts, Steven Meisel, Bruce Weber, Dallas Logan, and Jamie Nelson, but Winters has defined his own artistic sensibility: “Most people have the misconception that beauty is aesthetic…Beauty is familiarity, and as human spiritual creatures, our feelings are what we connect to most.  In every shot I take, my goal is to convey that familiar emotion that makes the viewer stop and stare.”
